Bug Description

I tried Xubuntu 14.04 Live USB Stick on my Dell Vostro 3550.

Every view seconds, a "Display configure screen settings and layout" window pops up and wants to configure my screen layout.

sometimes 2 windows pop up at the same time, sometimes, 4 or even more.

Dell Vostro 3550 has a separate AMD graphic card and a integrated Intel i5-2410M Intel Graphic card that is switchable using AMD FGLRX Driver. But I use only standard X.org driver.

Please see attached screenshot.

This happens on my wife's dell laptop running Xubuntu 14.04 as well. Also with AMD graphics. Quite annoying.

Good to know that this is not a bug of my computer.

I searched dmesg, /var/log/syslog, X-Server log but could not find any new logentry that could give more information.

What can I do to bring more information?

This is related but not a duplicate!

- I get this windows every couple of seconds - even if I don't press any key.

- I don't have fglrx installed - I use standard x driver.

Should be also related to bug 1264629 (see comment #8 for a possible workaround).

a new instance of xfce4-display is being launched every 5 seconds

an infinite number of instances of xfce4-display are being launched

this makes the computer UNUSABLE

this started happening on my computer after a recent upgrade, prior to that it did not happen.
See bug 1375020 for details (marked as a dup of this one)

The 5 second interval is very consistant, there is some kind of polling activity going on.

For me the fix is to run the 3.13.0-34 kernel, I do not have this problem when I run that kernel or older. I only have this problem when I run a more recent kernel, e.g. the latest update.

Another workaround could be to uncheck "Configure new displays when connected" in the display settings dialog.

I have a Dell Vostro 3550 and this bug also affects me. The following workaround worked for me: I have removed the shortcut
for 'xfce4-display-settings --minimal' from the "Settings Manager >> Keyboard >> Application Shortcuts".
This solution was inspired by this old discussion: https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=9075

This was most likely fixed in the Linux kernel at some point.
