Xfce panel drag + drop should create folder launchers

System: Ubuntu 11.10 with gnome desktop and with xfce desktop, fully updated

Start the system as Xubuntu with the xfce desktop

If I drag a short-cut (launcher) -- eg of a folder -- from the desktop to the xfce panel, then it fails to drop into the panel as a copy.

(Note: If I instead start the system up with the gnome desktop, then this drag+drop works fine in the gnome panel.)

Thank you for reporting this issue. Xfce does not have drag and drop from desktop to panel yet. However, you can drag any launcher from a menu to the panel. This is planned to happen in the future, with an as yet unknown implemenation date.

No, AFAIK xfce4-panel supports drag and drop of application launchers only. File (or folder) launchers are not supported, because the upstream developer doesn't see a clear use case for that (cf. Bug #760149 and <https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7894>).

It is useful and efficient in a production environment to have links in the panel to clearly-identified folders with active documents or with frequently-used documents. In this manner, these documents are readily available at a single click.

It avoids having to use a time-consuming search application.

It also keeps the desktop clear, and avoids the abuse of the desktop as a permanent file store.

Note: On the gnome desktop this functionality is directly available in the gnome panels.
