Bug Description

Binary package hint: xfce4-panel

test system: iMX51 (Efika MX), Maverick built from rootstock on 2010-09-15. Since a few weeks, the Xfce desktop panel has been broken. After ruling out the obvious things, all I can do is look at this button that is truncated here.

Basically what I see is

Ap| [ ] Places O (?)

There should be an Ubuntu icon logo and the full text Application, no?

Will upload a screenshot as soon as I can. This happens on Rob Nelson's Beagleboard images too, and the Xorg driver is fbdev so I cannot imagine it is a graphics driver bug. The rest of the system is tantamount to "perfect", it just has this one menu item too small and I cannot expand the size any way I try.

For those who does not know what rootstock is - it is wrapper to debootstrap which runs postinst stuff in qemu to allow to generate rootfs for other architecture (efikamx is ARM).

I checked few suggestions given on irc:

- changing name of applet (from Programy -> Xfce Menu -> Applications)
- remove + add xfcemenu applet
- restarting xfce4-panel
- resizing panel

Nothing helped.

It looks like horizontal size for applet is given only to size of icon (always square adapted to vertical size of panel). I tried flower.jpg, vim-16.xpm and nothing helped. For now I moved to using icon instead of text as this just works.

Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work, I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here.

I did have Marcin Juszkiewicz remove and re-add the menu to the panel, and also increase the panel size to 124. At 124, more of the characters are visible. Not sure if this is a bug in Xubuntu or Xfce, though.

Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

This time I tried 1024x600px picture as icon but it was scaled to fit in square so nothing changed.

Thanks, Marcin.

The panel code was re-written for Xfce4.8, which is in Natty, so maybe it got fixed in the re-write.

Our daily linaro alip images for natty which includes xfce does not show this bug.

If it's fixed in natty, it means it was fixed during the 4.8 panel rewrite, so it's very unlikely to be fixed in 4.6 (in maverick).
