xfce4-panel crashed with SIGSEGV in panel_plugin_external_child_watch_destroyed()

xfce4-notifyd was crashing a few times (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfce4-notifyd/+bug/1220244 ) when I was trying to get my bluetooth working, and apparently took xfce4-panel with it.
