Since Quantal, I don't have the Messaging Menu icon in xfce4-panel anymore.

That's expected, it's only build for gtk3, and they changed the api at the last moment so we won't do any gtk2 "fork".

Is there any possibility of this returning or further discussion of how it could or couldn't be done anywhere? Trying to search for this just finds lots of copies of the decision in the release notes...

That's not an indicator-messages issue, xfce needs to start using gtk3...
