Bug Description

I am running Xubuntu Edgy, and I am trying to get my microphone to work. Every time I open Volume Control though, if I try moving the 'Capture' slider up, the slider falls back down to the bottom immediately. Using amixer I did set capture to:

Simple mixer control 'Capture',0
  Capabilities: cvolume cswitch cswitch-joined
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Capture 0 - 15
Front Left: Capture 15 [100%] [on]
Front Right: Capture 15 [100%] [on]

So maybe it is on but just not updating graphically. If 'Capture' really is on, I need to find out what is wrong with my mic.

I had the same problem in Xubuntu Gutsy with Intel HDA integrated sound card.

I managed to ifx it with the steps from ubuntu forum thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=268652

Namely:
# sudo alsactl names
# sudo alsactl store
# sudo reboot
# After reboot run alsamixer and make sure you have 'Mic' and 'Capture' sliders marked selected as CAPTURE ... to do this with space bar and then then unmute all recording to 100%.
# now the slider should stay at the position it was set to.

I remember to have the same problem with Edgy and to have solved it the same way. It may not work for all soundcards, though.

Should be fixed in jaunty and karmic (with the new mixer that uses gstreamer).
