Bug Description

Since upgrading to Trusty yesterday, the XFCE4 indicator applet no longer works. I can install it in the panel and see all my indicators appear, but within a few seconds it crashes, the indicators disappear and I get a message offering to remove the applet from the panel.

I did not have this problem while I was using Saucy.

It sounds like the same issue as bug #996218 (which was declared invalid because it involved a package not included in Ubuntu at the time, but which affected a few people).

If I understand you correctly, it sounds like you have indicator-appmenu installed and enabled. Unfortunately this isn't a configuration we can support in 14.04 - it will consistently crash the panel.

The workaround is to hide indicator-appmenu:

1. Right click the indicator plugin and click properties
2. Click "hide" next to "Application Menus (Global Menu)"
3. Restart the panel: xfce4-panel -r

If you still get crashes after hiding appmenus and restarting the panel, please report it here. Hiding it prevents the crashes in all our testing configurations but there might be some corner cases.

It's not the indicator-appmenu but the indicator applet. Find pictures attached.

The workaround with hiding appmenu option in indicator applet worked for me.

I can confirm that I was having the same issue as well. I followed the instructions about hiding the global menu, and I have not had any problems as of yet. I could not right-click the indicator applet though, I had to right-click the panel, click on panel, then click on Panel Preferences, then select the Items tab, then select Indicator Applet, and then click on the notepad & pen icon to edit it, and then I could put a check mark next to Application Menus (Global Menus) to hide it. Then I restarted the panel using the command in the terminal. I am running Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty LTS. I hope this helps others as well.
