Bug Description

Binary package hint: xfmedia

First of all:
Xubuntu edgy with latest updates
`xfburn --version`
This is xfburn version 0.2.0 for Xfce 4.3.99.1
built with GTK+-2.10.2, linked with GTK+-2.10.6.

I try to burn ISO with xfburn:
Select ISO image
Choose write speed

Click burn and!..
NOTHING
message appears in xfburn "console": invalid speed .

So as I understand speed reads from the form as '. '

As I understand xfburn uses cdrecord for burning CDs. From terminal with cdrecord everything work OK!

I have the same problem. Looks like cdrecord does not like the speed parameter being passed to it by Xfburn.

I can confirm this bug.

xubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn.
Xfce 4 Desktop Environment version 4.4.0 (Xfce 4.4)
Xfburn 2.0.2 Xfce 4.4.0

A CD ROM which is capable to write, at least under Ubuntu 6.10.

What I do:
Insert a new CD. Open Xfburn. Choose burn CD Image. Choose the ISO file. either leave the speed as default or choose a lower one to be on the safe side. Hit "write the image".
Result:
No action but some info as: Estimated writing speed: no info FIFO buffer: no info device buffer: no info / View output Use wodim dev=help to get a list of possible SCSI transport specifiers.
What expected:
To burn the ISO image to the CD
Reproducable or not:
Always

Some more info and comment for developers:

* Bug #83077 may be related with or may be a duplicate of this bug.

* A search in Ubuntu Forums for "xfburn" and "xfburn iso" give many results. But the most shocking one for me is the one with "xfburn doesn't burn iso" title at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=367411&highlight=xfburn+iso . From that thread, its understood that the issue was valid and known even during the Edgy era. People advices each other some other tools! Some chat on IRC #xubuntu gave me the same impression. Seems that almost everybody knows that Xfburn doesn't work in some way and they accept it as if something normal. "Just install x, y, z!" For me, if the default burner tool of a distro is not working in a similar or same way in two consecutive release, the issue may be related with seriousness in working style in general, apart from having another ordinary single bug.

Regards.

I'm not an expert on such issues but the points below may give some clue about this bug:

* Developer of Xfburn says "Use libburn (libburnia.pykix.org) instead of cdrecord tools":
http://svn.xfce.org/svn/xfce/xfburn/trunk/NEWS
* cdrecord is among the dependencies of Xfburn in Xubuntu
* When I refer to cdrecords Web page, it says "Warning: do not use Debian binaries as they include many Debian specific bugs and still do not run correctly on Linux-2.6", "An original recent cdrecord correctly deals with the problems on Linux-2.6." etc.:
http://cdrecord.berlios.de/old/private/cdrecord.html
* Xubuntu's kernel at the moment is 2.6.20-15-generic

Regards.

I think Xfburn not ready for such cool distro as Xubuntu. Graveman much better

Since Xfburn in Xubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04 won't burn CD ISO images, I had to install a package called X-CD-Roast from the repositories. After figuring out how to use the program in a non-root mode and adding directory where my image was, I was able to sucessfully burn an CD ISO image.

I hope this helps other who are still struggling with this bug.

we're trying to get brasero on the CD for Gutsy. Xfburn has been dropped because it is unmaintained upstream

Should we recommend users to install brasero as an alternate application to xfburn, and then close this bug?

Xfburn will still be broken, so this bug should stay open until it's fixed.

FYI: xfburn is maintained again, and we are switching to libburn instead of cdrecord / wodim.

We are still a bit away from a release, but work is under way.

Jerome, you marked the Ubuntu task as fix committed. I assume you meant upstream's trunk?

Yes, fix committed is also very often used for this.

Yes, you would mark it fix committed in an upstream task. However, you had marked the Ubuntu package as fix committed and no fix was been committed for the Ubuntu package. :)

This should be fixed when xfburn 0.3.0 is synced from debian unstable (Bug #240061).
