Bug Description

This bug occurs when the PandaBoard is connected to a DVI monitor with native resolution of 1680 x 1050. When connected to a DVI monitor with a native resolution of 1920 x 1080, this problem does not occur.

The lightdm window manager never displays the greeter screen. This is the output of "/var/log/lightdm/x-0.log":

root@linaro-ubuntu-desktop:~# cat /var/log/lightdm/x-0.log

I disabled lightdm using

After rebooting, I ran startx using

It is still a problem.

I wonder if this is happening just with unity 3d (with the sgx driver). I know the kernel still contains quite a few issues related with the display subsystem, and unfortunately the latest driver is only available for Quantal (as it's a new Xorg ABI).

I have this problem with Ubuntu Raring on the Pandaboard ES. Even having a 1920x1080 monitor I need to do the console trick. My monitor also only works on the DVI port with Raring and displays only in 1600x900.

Changed in xf86-video-omap (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → High

If I plug the monitor into the HDMI port I do not get any screen output, neither for the X desktop nor for the text console, but X is running and if I SSH in from another machine xrandr gives:

till@till-panda:~$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 2048 x 2048
DVI-D-1 disconnected
HDMI-1 connected 1920x1080+0+0 510mm x 287mm
   1920x1080 60.0*+
   1680x1050 59.9
   1400x1050 59.9
   1280x1024 60.0
   1280x960 60.0
   1360x768 60.0
   1280x768 60.0
   1024x768 60.0
   800x600 60.3
   848x480 60.0
   640x480 60.0
till@till-panda:~$

So X finds the correct resolution when the monitor is connected to the HDMI port but the monitor does not see any signal. The monitor has only a DVI port and is connected via a passive HDMI->DVI adapter. The monitor (EIZO EV2333W 23", 1920x1080 native) works on the HDMI port of the Pandaboard if the Pandaboard is running Precise.

Running Raring with the Pandaboard connected to a TV (Sony Bravia from 2007, 720p) the desktop displays immediately without any problems.

Attaching logs of the Pandaboard running Raring with the EIZO connected to the HDMI port (system is configured for auto-login).

Another test: I got an HDMI switch box (Ligawo HDMI Matrix 4->2 - 3D, with audio extractor) now, to connect more than one video/audio source to one HDMI input of a screen. It seems that the device fakes a better HDMI monitor input than the passive HDMI->DVI switch as during a new Raring installation (on another SD card) I get an absolutely correct 1920x1080 image on my monitor and after boot I get also a working desktop with 1920x1080.

For project "linaro-ubuntu", Linaro has switched from GUI based ubuntu image to solid command line console, and this "ubuntu desktop display" test is no longer applicable.

Changed in linaro-ubuntu:
