Bug Description

Binary package hint: xdm

Steps to repeat problem:
Boot up
Log in using xdm login screen that appears
Press Ctrl-Alt-F1 (should display tty1) does nothing
Press Ctrl-Alt-F7 (should still display working X display) gives black screen, and typing causes code to appear depending upon keys pressed
Press Ctrl-Alt-F1 a second time after pressing Ctrl-Alt-F7 shows TTY1 (correct), which has been logged in and receiving other keyboard input from TTY7 (which is not expected behaviour)

Workaround:
sudo /etc/init.d/xdm restart

System info:
Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS from minimal CD with only required packages installed

According to dpkg -s, the versions are:
xserver-xorg 1:7.5+ubuntu1 (although xorg.0.log shows 1.7.6)
xdm 1:1.1.8-6ubuntu2
openbox 3.4.10-1ubuntu0.1

Other (hopefully relevant) log files: (NB. ubuntu-bug run on a different boot-up from these log files, but same problem encountered)

---

Both on boot (when problem is encountered) and after xdm restart, ps aux gives similar output e.g. below (NB. always gives :0 as display and tty7):

root 870 3.7 1.8 16276 9456 tty7 Ss+ 13:24 0:01 /usr/bin/X :0 vt7 -nolisten tcp -auth /var/lib/xdm/authdir/authfiles/A:0-qfibQn

---

auth.log extract showing that TTY1 also logs in when logging in using xdm screen

I have a fix.

It turns out that xdm is so fast when initializing (thanks to it being lightweight + the Plymouth/DRM/kernel mode-setting stack) that it seems to expose a bug in that stack when tty7 (xdm) is initialized before tty1-tty6 (getty). This is why this bug is only seen by people using xdm as opposed to gdm.

First, remove the misplaced xdm startup script:
  $ sudo update-rc.d -f xdm remove

Then, create /etc/init/xdm.conf with the following content:
start on (started tty1 and started tty2 and started tty3 and started tty4 and started tty5 and started tty6)
  expect fork
  exec /usr/bin/xdm

This waits for all 6 getty instances to be launched before launching xdm, and solves the problem completely for me. I posted about my maddening experience to track down this bug here: http://blog.zorinaq.com/?e=59

I have this same problem (on Ubuntu Server 11.10), and the fix did not work for me. I am also on a solid state drive with minimal install.

At this step: "Press Ctrl-Alt-F7 (should still display working X display) gives black screen, and typing causes code to appear depending upon keys pressed", pressing 2 or Enter causes xdm to restart (mentioned in several on-and-off plymouth bugs not obviously related).

I can tentatively confirm Xorg is running on vt7 (don't 100% know what I'm doing, but it's in "ps aux" and "Xorg.0.log" before and after restart)

From the linked forum bog post about the fix - I can confirm that if I type into xdm quickly, it skips the beginning of my login on tty1.

If I switch to tty2 and log in, input is also mirrored to tty7.

Installing slim in place of xdm seemed to fix the problem--I don't urgently need the bug fixed, but if more info is needed (or if I'm experiencing a different bug), let me know and I can post more details.

Oops, spoke far too soon. Switching to slim did not fix the problem.

Eventually gave up and added in a 1-second delay, which seems to fix things.
