xdg-open does not properly detect Lubuntu session as LXDE session:

Lubuntu's $DESKTOP_SESSION variable is "Lubuntu", which is not accommodated in xdg-open script.

This is an annoying bug that should be fixed. Many of the bugs in this list are versions of this

The solution is very simple

xdg-open 311: elif [ x"$DESKTOP_SESSION" = x"Lubuntu" ]; then DE=lxde;
