Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

In the German translation the folder "Desktop" is named "Arbeitsfläche" in the side pane but shows up as "Desktop" in the main pane (see first screenshot). At first I though this is because I changed from the installation language (English) to the German lang pack, but it also happens with a "pure" German system (see second screenshot).

What I expect to see:
- when switching languages: keep the folder names and bookmarks/links (which it did for folders other than "Desktop")
- when installing a non-English system: either translate the folder too or change the side pane item to "Desktop"

Don't know if this is a translation, nautilus or gvfs issue.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Oneiric Ocelot. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

it's a translation issue, it doesn't happen there with french, note that if a "Desktop" directory exist xdg-user-dirs-gtk will keep this one for compatibility rather than creating a translated one which would lead to have 2 directories with different content

The current xdg-user-dirs-gtk translation export has

"#: translate.c:3
msgid "Desktop"
msgstr "Desktop""

in its de.po

We probably need updated translations

affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) → xdg-user-dirs-gtk (Ubuntu)

Similar things happen on the desktop itself - the home folder is labeled "home" (small h!) even with German locale, and "Computer" is also not translated to "Rechner" (see attached screenshot).
