Bug Description

Binary package hint: xchat

Every time when xchat was going to display a tray balloon, I got an error that said that my Tray Balloon's didn't work. The solution (according to the error) was to install 'libnotify'. When I wanted to install 'libnotify', I noticed that it was already installed in Synaptic. I tried to reinstall it, but the error consisted.

Installing libnotify-bin fixed the problem...but I guess there is some kind of bug in xchat, because he asked me to install libnotify (which was already installed).

I just encountered the same bug. Note that it's libnotify1 which is already installed. There's no package named libnotify at all. I can confirm that XChat asks for libnotify instead of libnotify-bin. The right package (libnotify-bin) is listed in the dependencies, but most users (especially who use Add/Remove Programs instead of Synaptic) won't be able to find this information.
It's probably best to install libnotify-bin when XChat is instaled through Add/Remove Programs, and if not, correct/improve the error message so the user has a way to fix this problem.

And to correct myself: the right package is NOT listed in the dependencies, but in the recommendations. That's why it's not installed automatically.

Hi,

This is now fixed in Intrepid, as the package will be installed automatically.

Thanks,

James

This also affects me. 2.8.4 on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS.

Installing libnotify-bin solves the problem. xchat should automatically include libnotify-bin when it is installed to resolve this problem.

Just had the same bug on Hardy.

Please note that the default apt-get behavior is to install recommended packages.
However xchat should be installed properly even when user has changed this default.
So it's advised to add the dependency of xchat on libnotify-bin explicitly.

Thanks !
