Try:

xboard -fcp gnuchess

if you have gnuchess installed. Should also work with crafty and phalanx.

The default method of xboard installation adds an system menu item in "Application -> Games", but when I try to select "xboard" from the menu, I have got the same quite disturbing and misleading message. Which makes Application -> Games ->XBoard totalyl useless -- it does not anything except displaying error message.

This can be fixed by any of the following :

1. checking if "gnuchess" is installed and adding "-ncp" parameter to the command line if not.
2. requiring "gnuchess" installation along with the xboard installation
3. removing "Applications -> Games -> XBoard" menu item, so people can have fun with the command line parameters

This should be fixed with the latest version of xboard.

The default chess engine for xboard, fairymax, is now in Recommends and should be installed with xboard.
