Bug Description

I believe this is a continuation of Bug#662077, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wxwidgets2.8/+bug/662077 WxWidgets apps don't have menus.

The TrueCrypt menu bar (Volumes, Favorites, Tools, Settings, Help) does not appear when appmenu-gtk is installed.

I can reproduce this problem in 2 PCs, a desktop and laptop; with any of the Gnome 2 ("Classic"), Gnome 3 (via PPA), and Xfce display managers. Uninstalling appmenu-gtk will restore TrueCrypt's menu bar.

1. Release: Ubuntu 11.04

2. Packages:
TrueCrypt 7.0a
appmenu-gtk, 0.2.1-0ubuntu3
wxWidgets 2.8.11.0-0ubuntu8 (wx-common)
wxWidgets 2.8.11.0-0ubuntu8 (libwxgtk2.8-dev)
wxWidgets 2.8.11.0-0ubuntu8 (wx2.8-headers)
wxBase wx2.8.11.0-0ubuntu8 (libwxbase2.8-dev)
wxBase 2.8.11.0-0ubuntu8 (libwxbase2.8-0)
wxBase 2.8.11.0-0ubuntu8 (libwxgtk2.8-0)

3. Expected to happen:
The TrueCrypt menu bar (Volumes, Favorites, Tools, Settings, Help) appears in the correct window location.

4. What happened instead:
The TrueCrypt menu bar (Volumes, Favorites, Tools, Settings, Help) does not appear. When appmenu-gtk is uninstalled, the menu appears in the correct location.

Same problem, also on Linux Mint 11 Katya.

« At least one poster said that unistalling appmenu-gtk solved the missing menu bar in TrueCrypt »

Just removed appmenu-gtk, it worked. The file menu is back in truecrypt.
Now I hope there are no side effects of removing appmenu-gtk...

I'm not familiar with TrueCrypt or how to get it, but this sounds like a new way that they are using menu. It's kinda difficult to say how that is without looking at the source.

A work around is to modify the TrueCrypt launcher so that it does "UBUNTU_APPMENU=" before executing the executable. This will make it so that it doesn't use the application menus.

affects: appmenu-gtk → dbusmenu

Ted, could you explain that in more detail with "UBUNTU_APPMENU=". I can't see any difference when I do "UBUNTU_APPMENU=" and then "truecrypt" in a terminal. Thanks a lot! This bug is really annoying for me, no more automount on startup, have to mount everything manually...

On Linux Mint 11 (and Ubuntu 11.04?) the workaround should be "UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=".

To be more specific, use the following command in your launcher:
env UBUNTU_MENUPROXY= /usr/bin/truecrypt
