I had a defunct process so I killed the script that was running for wu-ftpd (I gave it 20 minutes).

Hmm, I'm not sure I got any questions about wu-ftpd but when I did the upgrade I chose to do replace on all config files that I was asked about.

I encountered this problem too while upgrading from Hardy to Intrepid.

wu-ftpd.postins had become defunct and I had to kill the parent process.

No questions pertaining to wu-ftpd were asked during the upgrade process.

I also had the same problem while migrating from hardy to intrepid.
However I got a question first - maybe 30 minutes before: something like "What do you want to do with wu-ftp config"? (not sure).

After that, the worst: after a 1 hour install, the installer said "wu-ftp problem bla bla... click Next to uninstall the new ubuntu and attempt a recovery" !!
Just for the small wu-ftp - that can be installed later... cancel the whole upgrade and get an unstable system?!?!?!

Fortunately I "killall <mylogin>"ed to be sure to extinct the try-to-uninstall-and-recover processes - successfully!

Then reboot and -almost- no problem. Just my NVidia GeForce card that was not recognized anymore and the display looked like the one that can be seen after a night of beers :) So no display... I touched xorg.conf badly - fortunately - so that Ubuntu at restart asked me if I wanted a default graphics config for my system ; after a yes, it is now OK! Ouf!

wu-ftpd hangs during a normal install, it's not just during upgrades. This is on a fresh 9.04 install:
