Bug Description

Binary package hint: wpasupplicant

I have recently upgraded to 9.10 and I use 802.11 to connect wirelessly to the internet and wpa_supplicant is causing my system to completely crash, and I have to manually restart the computer. I have confirmed that wpa_supplicant is the culprit with /var/log/syslog. In every instance where the system crashes, wpa_supplicant scans the system until it crashes, with a series of log entries like this: "Nov 1 23:41:26 desktop wpa_supplicant[1165]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS". There is more information in my ubuntuforums thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1308826. Others seem to be having the same problem on ubuntuforums.org. Find attached my syslog file, and two others shortened syslog files where I have highlighted with *** the last log entry before a freeze/crash, and with ### the first after restarting the computer.

I have a similar problem.

I just installed 9.10 from scratch in a system using a wifi adaptor Atheros AR5001X+ (AR2414 chipset). Ubuntu 9.10 automatically assigns to it the ath5k driver. With 9.04 this combination was problematic resulting in frequent crashes solved when I switched to the madwifi driver. Madwifi is not available with 9.10.

I had one unexplained crash in the 48 hours I've been running 9.10. Examining the syslog, I noticed a message from wpa_supplicant every 2 minutes. Other than that one crash, the system seems to be running fine.

Is the wpa_supplicant insistence a problem in itself? A bug?

Here is a sample from syslog:

-----

I believe the constant CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS by the wpa_supplicant might be a bug in itself. Several others have reported it as a bug.

Tried a clean installation of both Ubuntu 9.10 and Xubuntu 9.10 and the problem occurs in both, so currently I'm restricted to using a wired network.

These crashes started after a clean install of 9.10. No problems in 9.04.

Further to my last comment, I'm not certain that the crash and messages are related. The messages appear several times without a machine crash so perhaps it's a false association.

I'm running the netbook remix on a Toshiba NB100... the exact same bug has been freezing my system since install.
The problem was masked by the easy connects to my home network, I just swept it under the rug until trying to take the netbook on vacation... it was a nightmare.

When no network is available, or when the networking is disabled, the system freezes, the only thing in the logs is the intermittent notice from wpa_supplicant as mentioned above. After a lot of frustration, I found that booting into the rescue kernel and starting X manually gave me a working system (with some drivers missing...) but everything was smooth. Booting into a failsafe gnome, the wpasupplicant was still unfulfilled, but the system stayed functional until I started the gdm-launcher. I was able to run anything as a command or from the standard gnome-menu shortcut, but as soon as the gdm-launcher was activated, the freeze was on.

I am still new to linux, but the pattern I observed seemed to be an interaction between networking and the gdm-launcher. Everything worked fine with either gdm or networking (unconnected).

I hope this helps. If any logs or info from any of these trials would be helpful, let me know.

After a fresh install of Karmic, I experienced fairly frequent random crashes which required hard resets. At first I thought the crashes might graphics driver related but was able to rule this out when the system crashed with no applications open at all.

I then noticed the prevalence of syslog entries such as:

{{{
Feb 25 21:18:13 truffles wpa_supplicant[1164]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS
Feb 25 21:20:13 truffles wpa_supplicant[1164]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS
}}}

just before crashes occurred. This was *before* finding this bug report.

After finding this bug report, I tried turning wireless networking off and using a network cable, and had a couple of days working without any network connection at all. In both cases I had no further crashes. Turning wireless networking back on coincides with crashes reoccurring.
