Bug Description

Binary package hint: wpasupplicant

Hello,

Can you add the patch available in the
http://www.ralinktech.com.tw/data/RT61_Linux_STA_Drv1.1.0.0.tar.gz archive because now it is difficult and non intuitive to make this chipset work with WPA.
If it is possible, this wireless card will work out of the box with Network-manager.
If there are a license issue, maybe add it on multiverse or something like that.
I've didn't look in the other tar.gz but there are mebe the same for other cards here : http://www.ralinktech.com/ralink/Home/Support/Linux.html

Thanks

I have been asked via private email already about this. The referenced source in the package doesn't mention a copyright holder nor a licence. if this is cleared, I'd happily forward that upstream

Changed in wpasupplicant:
status: Unconfirmed → Needs Info

I've done a .deb wpa_supplicant package patched to support ralink cards...
The package is actually available here: http://3v1n0.tuxfamily.org/pool/edgy/3v1n0/wpasupplicant_0.5.7+3v1ubuntu6_i386.deb

However newer releases will be at: http://3v1n0.tuxfamily.org/dists/edgy/3v1n0 (link may change on newer ubuntu versions)

Finally, if you want a .diff from the ubuntu-version to the patched one, I'm here...

Attached you'll find the first patch to apply the RaLink's instructions just using the patch command

Another patch to be applied to the ubuntu package source file, it adds a new .dpatch file on debian/patches (26_ralink_rt61_driver_support.dpatch) that applies the patch to the sources...

I hope you'll apply this to feisty...

treviño, thanks for your patch. unfortunately and as I said above, we cannot include it into ubuntu because that code lacks a proper copyright statement. Please clarify the licence with its author (I suspect it was some ralink employee)

Well, The source package mentioned above contains a "license" file in the Module directory wich the GPL license inside...
Unfortunately there's no license file or contact informations so it's hard to understand the author...
However if there's no license, in the wpa_supplicant code maybe it's GPL too :P

correct. In order to include it in ubuntu, we need to be sure.

Finally!!! Upgraded to Gutsy and my old Edimax PCMCIA card works with WPA! No more special configuration or tricks with config files. Many thanks to the one who fixed it, it was one of most annoying malfunctions in Ubuntu for me :)

I don't think there is any point to enabling a vendor specific extension to wpa_supplicant at this time, rt61pci of the rt2x00 driver family supports wext driver interface, and that is all we should support from this point on. rt61 legacy driver will soon be of historical significance only.
