Bug Description

Binary package hint: wine1.2

1) lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 10.10
Release: 10.10

2) apt-cache policy wine1.3
wine1.3:
  Installed: 1.3.10-0ubuntu1~maverickppa1
  Candidate: 1.3.10-0ubuntu1~maverickppa1
  Version table:
 *** 1.3.10-0ubuntu1~maverickppa1 0
        500 http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-wine/ppa/ubuntu/ maverick/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) What is expected to happen is when one downloads Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003 from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=3657ce88-7cfa-457a-9aec-f4f827f20cac&displaylang=en

installs it in WINE, then opens MS .docx file downloaded from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=a471da91-dcbb-4e9a-8b6c-778a79038758&displaylang=en

it opens.

4) What happens instead is when one tries to open the file, MSOWV notes "This file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Word. Do you want to download a compatibility pack so that you can work with this file?" clicked Ok, then window pops up "Program Error The program WORDVIEW.EXE has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." clicked ok, got log file (please see attached wine1.3.10: wine wordview.exe.txt).

WORKAROUND: Use WINE 1.2.2 from PPA via sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa && sudo apt-get -y update && sudo apt-get -y upgrade && sudo apt-get -y install wine1.2

WORKAROUND: Download and install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats via:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/confirmation.aspx?FamilyId=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en

then open the file.

In Ubuntu 10.10, PPA WINE 1.2.2 when attempting to open the above mentioned Word document, when clicking OK from the prompt it opened a link in Firefox to download the compatibility pack as a separate install executable ( http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/confirmation.aspx?FamilyId=
941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en ). The separate compatibility pack executable installed successfully and I was able to open the above Word document. Looks like a regression.

In Ubuntu 10.10, PPA WINE 1.3.11 same crash as WINE PPA 1.3.10 above. The next step seems to be regression testing ( http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting ).

In 1.5.3, Word Viewer opens builtin iexplore.exe to the download page for the compatibility pack when attempting to open a docx file. The download link does not work in builtin IE, but that's a different bug. Manually downloading and installing the compatibility pack works fine, and Word Viewer is then able to open docx files

It still doesn't work quite the way it's supposed to, but this bug is about a crash, and there is none, so I'm marking it fixed.
