Bug Description

Binary package hint: wine1.2

It's not quite a new bug, but it's in fact a really old one which I didn't find an answer to it. It's not a serious bug, but it could make people happy if it got fixed.

It seems to be the fact that Wine shut down itself too fast and games who also need some time to flush data to some files are unable to do and for consequence , their state won't be saved (I did read that once, but I couldn't locate the webpage at this moment). Once I'd put in WineHQ some clues about this issue:

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=18074

"Saving game state is *mandatory* before close application, or metal.ini won't be updated with last game settings as well."

By the way, disabling "Shader Pixel" as explained here (http://wiki.debian.org/HalfLife2#Unhandledpagefaultonreadaccessto0x00000000ataddress.28nil.29.28thread0046.29 doesn't work with 4x4 Evo.

Is this really related to Ubuntu? Shouldn't you be reporting this as a bug in Wine?

I did, but since Wine comes with Ubuntu, I think it should be reported here and updated upstream. If Wine wasn't part of Ubuntu distribution, I wouldn't be posting here (please bear in mind I'm not complaining, I'm just making a point).

Also, as we can see here: http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/wine1.2

At Lucid we've got 1.1.42-0ubuntu4 at this moment and by the way, version 1.1.42 is garbage for some software, as you can see here in my test report:

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=18074&iTestingId=52103

Thus, I'm testing Wine 1.3.1 and this bug doesn't exist anymore (until 1.3.0 it was present there). Anyway, 1.3.1 is only at PPA, and I know I shouldn't report errors from it here, So I'm doing exclusively at Wine's Bugzilla.

I hope regular users (with zero knowledge about Linux) won't need to wait until next LTS release to get this bug fixed. If it has something that I can do to help this people, I think it's keeping the developers and Ubuntu staff aware of these issues.

Seems perfectly valid to me, like any upstream project.
Would be good to have a link to an upstream bug though

Thank you for posting this bug.

What game(s) does issue occur with?

Does this occur in most recent WINE?

It happened mostly with the game that I'm maintaining at appdb: 4x4 Evolution. I think it's related to OpenGL, because I tested with d3d also and nothing happened.

Since Wine 1.3.1 it doesn't happen with OpenGL option. The game exits normally, saving the profile. With Wine 1.3.2 I didn't test yet.

Bremm, thank you very much for responding so quickly and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug is considered invalid as both the Launchpad & WINE community need per game Ubuntu bugs. However, the issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible using our WINE Maintainer Scott Ritchie's 1.3.2 PPA at https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-wine/+archive/ppa in the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Maverick Meerkat. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Hello rusivi1,

I'm running 4x4 Evo with Wine 1.3.2 since two days ago and so far it's doing pretty well. Game state has been saved every time I closed it. As stated above, this bug doesn't occur since version 1.3.1. :-)

Thank you.

This morning I got Wine 1.3.3 from LP-PPA-ubuntu-wine and just tested it. It's working flawlessy with this game, as good as version 1.3.1 and 1.3.2.

With Ubuntu 10.10 beta's Wine this bug happened in the very same way I reported a while back at appdb (between 1.1.44 and 1.3.0). This bug doesn't make the game unplayable (you just need save the player's profile before close it).

If you didn't freeze Wine at Maverick, please reconsider taking off the versions prior 1.3.1 (all 1.2, since we have 1.0 yet in the list).

Worth keeping around until we have a wine1.3 in Ubuntu?
