Bug Description

Wine (1:1.6.2-0ubuntu6) works fine on my notebook's integrated display, but stops drawing on an external monitor. A wine application still runs and receives input, but its window is simply frozen. Moving the window onto the border clearly shows how the left half redraws while the right half doesn't.

This affects not just specific applications but EVERY wine application/window, including even the ones that ship with wine like winecfg, regedit or explorer.exe.

I suspect this might be related to nvidia's Optimus: The external display is connected directly to the graphics card, while the the notebook screen's image is passed through the Intel GPU. I'm using the proprietary nvidia-331 (331.113-0ubuntu0.1) driver and nvidia-prime, no bumblebee.

I'm running Ubuntu 14.10, but apparently the problem exists on 14.04 as well: https://askubuntu.com/questions/601375/wine-not-working-on-external-monitor

I have exactly the same on my Ubuntu 14.04 Dell Precision M4700. It has an AMD card (see below), so it doesn't seem the problem is nvidia and/or driver specific.

$ lspci | grep -i vga
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Chelsea XT GL [FirePro M4000]

A few months ago, I switched between proprietary and opensource drivers, IIRC the problem wasn't there before the switch. I'm actually not sure what I have installed now; this is what dpkg tells me:

$ dpkg -l | grep -i '^ii.*fglrx'
ii fglrx-amdcccle-updates 2:15.201-0ubuntu0.14.04.1 amd64 Catalyst Control Center for the AMD graphics accelerators
ii fglrx-updates 2:15.201-0ubuntu0.14.04.1 amd64 Video driver for the AMD graphics accelerators
ii fglrx-updates-core 2:15.201-0ubuntu0.14.04.1 amd64 Minimal video driver for the AMD graphics accelerators

Same problem here on Fedora 24 (yes, I know... I should upgrade) with Nvidia card (Nvidia Quadro K1100M) and noveau drivers.
Laptop: Dell Precision M4800; external (4k) monitor connected via docking station + HDMI.

Wine Staging might have this solved already. I'm thinking of https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34978 here.

Besides that this might be the same problem for all of you, but it also might be three separate problems with just the same symptoms.

In any way, please test Wine Staging and then report back here.

Unfortunately this issue doesn't sound as if we could solve it here. So if Staging doesn't help you might also file a bug directly at bugs.winehq.org.
