Bug Description

Dragging the console window so that it is no longer taller than it is wide causes the browser to rotate to the correct orientation.

Also, I moved my Dash to the bottom, hence it not being on the left in the attached screenshot. That's working as intended :)

I’m not sure how to get to that configuration in a VirtualBox VM. How does one change the VM’s resolution to make the virtual screen’s height larger than its width? And how do you move the launcher to the bottom?

Also, are other apps based on the Ubuntu UI toolkit also affected? You can try e.g. the UITK gallery app.

How to get that configuration: install the virtualbox guest addition packages in the Ubuntu guest, specifically I have virtualbox-guest-x11 and virtualbox-guest-dkms installed. Then, just resize the VM console window to taste.

Moving launcher to bottom: gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Launcher launcher-position Bottom as discussed at https://plus.google.com/+MarcoTrevisan/posts/X46usgf7gSk
As mentioned above, this issue persists regardless of launcher position, I just mentioned it because the screenshot was potentially confusing :)

I'm unable to find another UITK app that actually runs inside Virtualbox, regardless of the "3D acceleration" setting in Virtualbox VM settings being enabled or not. gallery-app just gives me a white screen and running it in Terminal gives errors about DRI. I tried notes-app and mediaplayer-app and was unsuccessful at launching both. Any recommendations for another to try?

OK, I’ve managed to reproduce the issue in my VM (thanks for the instructions). I’ve also tested other apps based on the UITK (UITK examples gallery, addressbook app) and they don’t seem to be affected, this is browser-specific.
