Bug Description

hey

When I go onto certain flash-intensive pages, such as gamespot and cgnetworks,
but also onto normal pages like arstechnica, flexbeta and hotmail, every now and
then, totally unreliably, my firefox window turns white from top to bottom. If I
now close it, my desktop has a white mark on it, and every other window I click
on or open from now on is white in the same way, until my complete screen is
white!!! I can then logoff, logon again, and all is fine...
I have a geforce 6600gt, and this happens in hoary stable...

I shall upload my dmesg log next time it happens, shall I?? would that be useful?
thanks, nikolai

Are you using the proprietary nVidia driver?

no, im using the standard hoary driver

my "symptoms" are nothing like the ones on the other page, and they are not
there the whole time,
but only on certain occasions with firefox

I havent even installed flash this time by the way, hoping to avoid this
problem, and it still
happens on the same pages!

hokay, so

I tried the official "nvidia" (nvidia glx 7174) instead of the "nv" driver, and
firefox hasnt "gone white"/crashed since I installed it. I guess it must have
been that. So this bug should be, I suppose, called: on a geforce 6600 gt, using
the standard-installed nv driver can cause xserver corruption when viewing flash
pages...
why dont you just integrate their proprietary but opensource driver by default??
just wondering

cheers&thanks for the tips,
nikolai!

We don't ship the nvidia driver (as opposed to nv) by default because nv mostly
works for everyone, and it is open source, as opposed to nvidia.

I can confirm that this happens to me. I'm using Breezy Badger and also have an
NVidia 6600 GT. I have not y et tried the suggested fix.

Can we verify this if it still happens? I'm pretty sure some of the issues have been fixed in Breezy as an -update

OK let's assume this has been resolved then. In case it something like this comes back and haunt any of us, feel free to open the bug again. Thanks.
