Bug Description

When entering a URL in the URL field of the browser, it should not be necessary for the user to type "http://" before entering the name of a computer on the local network.

E.g., if a computer is named "toaster" on the local network, entering "toaster" in the address bar should browse to this computer, instead of performing a google search.

Similarly, entering "localhost" should browse to the local machine.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by "the URL of a computer on the local network"?

I’ve tried both "192.168.1.X" and "127.0.0.1", and in both cases the missing "http://" gets prepended, as expected.

Could this be a duplicate of bug #1311201 ?

Yes, it would be a dupe. The issue involves name resolution.

entering "toaster" should first check for a local machine named "toaster" before performing a search with Google.

I instead chose to mark bug #1311201 as a duplicate of this one, as this one is more general.
