Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

Gnome-terminal application uses QWERTY control characters even if I switch layout to Dvorak. I.e. even in Dvorak layout, I've to press CTRL-U on QWERTY to kill till the beginning of line. Other applications like Firefox don't exhibit this problem - they still work with Dvorak control keys

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Steps would be:

1. Switch to Dvorak keyboard layout from QUERTY using configured short cut (System -> Preferences -> Keyboard -> Layout)
2. Key in text to gnome-terminal application and you can see it follows Dvorak layout
3. Intent to press any control key, say, Ctrl-U so that it kills till the start of line in BASH. I.e. In a QUERTY physical layout keyboard you'd have to press Ctrl-F to send Ctrl-U since you're in Dvorak layout. But gnome-terminal still reads it as Ctrl-F (instead of the intended Ctrl-U) and moves the cursor forward. I.e. gnome-terminal let's you key in normal and meta characters in Dvorak layout, but not control keys.

This seems to work OK with other applications that I checked, say, Firefox. For example, to open a new tab (Ctrl-T) it accepts Ctrl-K in QUERTY physical key.

Hope I made it clearer.

(I don't mean to sound blunt - I could see that Adam Collard (presumably a team member) confirmed this bug. How come did it suddenly turn _unclear_ ?)

Adam Collard is member of no teams. Looks like he just set the status to confirmed just because. there's no comment or other thing indicating that the issue is also there for him.

Btw that works fine here i don't have the issue on Maverick, could you test the same on a live cd ? Please also test it with terminator (terminal emulator) thanks for your help.

I tried with Terminator and the behavior is the same as that of gnome-terminal - control keys are still sent according to QWERTY layout. I shall update after I test with a live CD.

Thanks for the quick test Jeenu, if you get the same with terminator that might be a vte issue, let's reassign it for now. thanks.
