Bug Description

Binary package hint: vpnc

When I try to establish a Cisco VPN session using vpnc, the connection is never successfully established. I imported the connection's .pcf file (which other people are using with their Cisco client) into network-manager, however I cannot get the connection up.

This is the output in /var/log/daemon.log:

I use WLAN and also cannot connect using VPNC. It used to work a few weeks ago so it seems there's a regression in later updates (?)

VPN still works flawlessly on Windows.

I'm trying to get mine working for the first time so I'm a bit unsure of whether I'm doing something incorrect or not. I'm pretty sure my VPN connection info is all correct as I was quite careful with it. I've tried various variants on that information anyway, but there's little ambiguity and that's making me think there's a bug. First off, when I try to connect I get no connection of course, but I also get no feedback from the GUI, which I think ought to be something added (I imagine it's a documented feature request).

Here's what I get in my /var/log/syslog:

!0.04 was working for me but 10.10 never. 11.04 b2 is also not working! Is this worth a fresh bug filing?

Does anyone ever manage to get vpnc to work on 10.10 or 11.04 b2?

Found my solution: Do not activate option "use this connection only for resources of its network" to be found in "Routes ..." of tab "IPv4 Settings". Unchecking this option solved my problems on 10.10 as well as in 11.04.

Thus, there is no bug at all from my point of view.

However, I would suggest a warning when choosing that option; e.g. "Beware of the consequences of 'use this connection only for resources of its network' because you will see vpn connections only in a specific network part."

And it's important to split domain\username into single parts and provide the user name for the Username and the domain for the Domain entry. Entering domain\username in the Username entry will not work.

I experienced this bug. Former I couldn't connect to cisco's VPN from NetworkManager and either command line. Next I discovered that is not a Ubuntu problem - I turned on "IPsec VPN passthrough" option on my home wifi router and now VPN is working out the box.

@Ilya Konyakhin (ilyakon): Omg, you are right. Activated the passthrough for IPsec in my router, now it works.

Let's add a message to vpnc that suggests doing this with the router?! I had a hard time finding this "bug"...

So based on comments, it looks like the iproute side of the problem was fixed quite a while ago. As for vpnc, the problem seemed to be that people didn't have ESP passthrough enabled.

Marking iproute as fixed and vpnc as invalid.

Changed in iproute (Ubuntu):
status: Confirmed → Fix Released
Changed in vpnc (Ubuntu):
status: Incomplete → Invalid
