Bug Description

I am connecting with an Ubuntu Hardy client to a Windows UltraVNC Server.

When trying to mark multiple items (e.g. in Windows Exploer by clicking on the first item in a list, then holding Shift and then clicking on one further down), it does not work. The holding of the Shift button is transmitted, but released as soon as the mouse click is transferred. On the server, it acts as if a simple click were issued.
It appears there is a problem in xvnc4viewer. Other viewers work fine, for example Windows UltraVNC client and xtightvncviewer from the Ubuntu repositories: 1.2.9-22

Versions:
Server: UltraVNC Win32 Server 1.0.5
Client: xvnc4viewer 4.1.1+xorg1.0.2-0ubuntu7

Thanks for fixing this!

This has been open for seven months. Still not fixed.
Bug still exists when client is Ubuntu Hardy and server is Ubuntu Jaunty.
(probably not server-related)

I confirm this bug is not server related, it is a client viewer bug in xvnc4viewer 4.1.1 and xtightvncviewer 1.3.9.
I have 3 servers running VNC as followos:-

Windows 2000 running UltraVNC
Ubuntu 9.04 running Vino
Ubuntu 7.10 running Vino

I can not "Shift + Click" or "Ctrl + Click" in a VNC viewer window on any of these servers from an Ubuntu 9.04 computer using xvnc4viewer 4.1.1, tsclient or xtightvncviewer 1.3.9.

However "Shift + Click" and "Ctrl + Click" in vinagre, gvncviewer and gtkvncviewer work ok on the Ubuntu 9.04 computer, but the response inside these viewers is very slow when connected to the Ubuntu vino servers. Using UltraVNC viewer run from the Windows 2000 computer the "Shift + Click" and "Ctrl + Click" works ok viewing the Ubuntu vino servers.

All versions of the VNC software are the latest for their Ubuntu distro's and if they were not already pre-installed with the OS, I installed them using the Synaptic Package Manager.

Still a problem in Maverick. As in previous releases it seems to be a problem only when Visual Effects are turned on. I have been leaving them off for a couple years or so as a workaround for this issue. Unfortunately Maverick has another issue for which there is a workaround of turning visual effects *on*. (I probably can't file that other one separately because it seems to be only reproducible on my hacked copy of vncviewer, which has a one-button toggle for FullScreen mode bound to F12. But without visual effects turned on, that FullScreen toggle seems to hang the X server.)

Hmm... looks like both issues also affect "ssvncviewer", which binds FullScreen toggle to F9.

I created a fix that works on Ubuntu Trusty. I reproduced this problem under Xubuntu and the attached patch solves it in my environment.

I am on Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS, using VNC to connect to a Windows 7 machine. I confirm that this shift-click bug still exists with the xtightvncviewer (1.3.9-6.4ubuntu1) and xvnc4viewer (4.1.1+xorg4.3.0-37ubuntu5.0.2) VNC clients. However, gvncviewer (version 0.5.3-0ubuntu2) does NOT have the bug, it works fine with both shift-click and ctrl-click.

Thanks to user "stolsvik" who pointed me to this bug report in the "vncviewer shift-click not working" discussion thread here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1296724
