Bug Description

Binary package hint: vlc

I have loaded the Monk season 7 disc 4 DVD. This sequence of actions failed:

1. Set the "Title" to "3" in the VLC Play Disc menu
2. Press Play
3. Click DVD menu button in toolbar
4. Click Episode Index on DVD menu
5. Click the episode that is linked to Title 4 on the DVD
6. VLC stops playing, showing the traffic cone icon.

If I play the DVD without setting the title in the VLC menu, leaving it at 0, it works fine.

So you selected one title and then you expect VLC play another one?! Sorry, that's not supposed to work.

I feel like you don't understand. When I clicked the DVD menu button,
and viewed the menu, VLC silently failed to play the title I clicked
on in the menu. Opening the DVD menu should clear out any
pre-selected title. If VLC is not going to play whatever I click on
in the menu, it should refuse to display the menu. This is simply a
case of broken UI that fails without explanation nor apparent reason.

Please do not mark this bug as invalid.

No, it shouldn't. Title/chapter selection from the open dialog is meant for precise "cut" of the media, and is particularly useful for recording, conversion or streaming. This is working as it is supposed to.

For what you want to do, you need to use the navigation menu ONLY and leave the open disc dialog fields unset.

I understand the desire to have it work that way for recording, conversion, or streaming. May I suggest, then, that either VLC should display a message rather than silently closing the media, or that those controls in the Open dialog be moved under "Show more options". I think controls that lead to advanced, unexplained behaviors shouldn't be exposed by default.

If you want to start from a specific chapter, open the DVD normally and select the chapter in the navigation menu. We are not going to redefine the logical-if-slightly-confusing behavior of the Disc dialog.
