Getting this crash after upgrade from 9.04. The same files (h264/AAC encoded video) would play just fine before the upgrade.

libass 0.9.6 which ships with Jaunty/Karmic is really crusty (i.e. not that old but very outdated already). Updating libass to 0.9.7+ and rebuilding VLC will probably fix it. This should be fixed in Lucid.

wily now has a new upstream release of libass. Is this still an issue?
