VLC doesn't play sound on movies unless movie is restarted

Bug Description

When playing movies with VLC, no sound is heard but video is running. However, if I stop the movie completely and then restart it, sound starts working. Many times, I need to stop and start the movie twice before I get sound. 100% reproducible, seems to be the same for all playable formats. No problem with sync or quality once it is started though.

I'm guessing it has something to do with mixing, as multiple sound sources also seems not to work.

This is on a fresh install of Ubuntu 5.10, then VLC installed via "Add Applications".

Please install vlc-plugin-alsa, then select the ALSA output in Preferences.

Thanks, that did the trick. :)

Still, should be that way by default, if Ubuntu uses ALSA?

I will make vlc-plugin-alsa a Depends in the next upload per consultation with MOTUMedia. Thanks.

Will settings also be set to use ALSA per default? I think it should, because otherwise it is still too confusing.

Yes, ALSA will be used by default if the plugin is there (see #4544). Upstream has tagged 0.8.4 in svn, so it's worth waiting for it to enter Debian Sid first.
