Bug Description

Duplicates #1720901 VLC under Wayland causes system freezes in fullscreen mode
As per advice in the original bug, I am cloning that one as a new bug.

Ubuntu version: 18.04 (most recent updates as of October 3rd)
VLC version: 3.0.3

What I expect to happen: When playing a video in VLC and switching to fullscreen mode everything should work fine. Also when changing to a different position of a movie in fullscreen I expect the player to just switch to that position.

What actually happens: It seems to depend a little on the file type of the video, mostly I get problems when going to fullscreen mode and then switching to a different position with the playback position bar. With some videos it was even enough to just open the fullscreen mode. The video freezes just displaying a frame while the audio keeps playing. The computer does not react any more to mouse or keyboard input, I have to perform a hard reboot.

This problem only appears under the Wayland session, in the Xorg session everything works fine as expected.

Crashing the whole Wayland display server would be a bug in the Wayland display server, not in VLC.

The trigger for the display server bug may be a VLC bug, but the crashing would be a display server bug nevertheless.

It happens in Xorg too. When I am in fullscreen and I hover the mouse over the playback position bar the video freezes a moment and if I click to a different position it freezes for a lot of time or forever and I have to reset my pc. Intel HD Graphics 3000. Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS. VLC 3.0.3-1-1ubuntu1. xserver-xorg-core 2:1.19.6-1ubuntu4.

Same problem here, display freezes if I move the mouse over the position bar in full screen VLC. The sound keeps on playing. Although closing the lid of my laptop so that it suspend itself, and then resuming makes it unfreeze.

Yesterday's VLC update to 3.0.4 fixed it for me.

The issue is still present on disco with VLC 3.0.6-1 and GNOME 3.30.1. I'm happy to deliver any relevant log files to resolve the issue.
