VLC tray icon in xubuntu 16.04 is large and doesn't fit in the tray area

Bug Description

VLC tray icon is larger than it was in xubuntu 15.10, and doesn't fit in the tray area like other tray icons.

I am affected by the same problem. Doesn't effect functionality, just aesthetic issue.

In 18.04 the tray icon is displayed by the new Status Notifier Plugin [1]. Also, it is properly sized now when shown in the classic Notification Area.
