Please upgrade ffmpeg to version 3.0. Lots of fixes and new filters and formats. Means: Better for an LTS version.

I completely agree (and FFmpeg developers would of course welcome this)
but it is unfortunately impossible / unlikely:

There is no vlc release that works with FFmpeg 3.0 (and I am sure you want
vlc in Ubuntu).

Ubuntu 16.04 should be released with ffmpeg 3.0 as default. For VLC you could release renamed ffmpeg packages(like _2.8 as ubuntu does with many packages) or add ffmpeg as part of vlc(and renamed libs) or just compile it static-ffmpeg and vlc are gpl so no problem. When vlc resolves ffmpeg 3.0 compatibility, there could be simple update

It's not really fixed in Debian. VLC just embeds its own older FFmpeg version, so that the rest of Debian can upgrade.

There are no volunteers to add support for FFmpeg 3.0 into VLC 2.2; that is potentially quite a lot of work.
