Bug Description

I'm using Ubuntu 15.10 and VLC 2.2.1.

When I add 2 different format files like a mp3 and a mp4 in the playlist then some action while playing like previous, next or stop and play will make pop a second menu bar. Then I can't close this menu. It happens most of the time.

This second menu seems to not appear on previous, next... if there is a single file in the playlist or if all the files in the playlist are of the same format.

The behaviour happens both with global or in windows menu bar.

First I report this bug to VLC but they answer that it must be linked to Qt theme and probably Ubuntu appmenu.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1510624/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

For me, this usually happens right as a video I was playing ends. when the interface returns to the empty VLC logo. The only way to get rid of it seems to be to close and re-open VLC. Also, not sure if this is related, sometimes when I double-click a file in Nautilus and it opens VLC, VLC will open for a second then immediately crash.

More like a fraction of a second actually. This especially happens if I double-click a file and then immediately double-click another in Nautilus, so that VLC is supposed to switch to the new file instead. (I may just be clicking things too fast, but this worked fine in 15.04.) However, occasionally it happens with a single file. But I should probably open a new bug for that...

Wait a minute, unlike the OP I haven't disabled the global menu... let me get a screenshot...

I've got same problem. When I start VLC (from dash, from console, from video file, from sound indicator etc.) everything looks OK (OK means that I've got only global menu bar), but... when I switch to full screen and than return I've got two menu bars (global and local). It drives me mad.

I'm using VLC 2.2.1 and Ubuntu 15.10 with Unity.

This is still a problem with VLC 2.2.2 in 16.04.

The second menu bar appears when the window returns from fullscreen and when a video finishes playing.

I confirm that 16.04 is also affected.

When VLC returns from fullscreen, the second menu bar becomes visible.
I'm using locally integrated menus.

This happens only in video files and not in music

Ubuntu 16.04:

if i start VLC from launcher, the window shows only the global menu, which is correct, then i open a video file and the old standard-menu bar appears in the window.

Ubuntu 16.04 VLC 2.2.2
Second menu appears when i exit the full screen mode while watching a video.
Both menus are fully functional and everything is working.
Closing and reopening VLC makes the second menu go away, but again if I go into full screen and then return back to "normal" screen it comes back again.

Issue still exists on Ubuntu 16.04 will the latest released updates installed. Is the fix released for 16.04 as well? If not, can we not mark the bug as Fixed?

I have also tested VLC on Ubuntu 16.04 and issue still exists.

I also tried to apply official daily PPA from https://launchpad.net/~videolan/+archive/ubuntu/stable-daily:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:videolan/stable-daily
sudo apt-get update

Update is installed, but issue is the same.

Two questions:
1. Was this bug fixed also for Ubuntu 16.04 or just for the latest Ubuntu 16.10?
2. Was fix pushed upstream to VLC official project or was if fixed locally for Ubuntu only?

Wouldn't it be nice to fix it also in 16.04? As LTS it's supposed to receive bug fixes for the next four and a half years to come.

Rémi Denis-Courmont (rdenis) wrote :

grofaty, there is no fix upstream. In fact, I understand the bug is in Ubuntu libraries, not in VLC.

So then, there is no fix to be upstreamed. That also explains why updating VLC on 16.04 won't fix the bug.

I know it has been a while since this has been "Fix released" however, this bug still effects users on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Is there a way to obtain a fix for this version?
