It seems like something is using the same Qt event ID ranges as VLC itself. I can't reproduce the problem, and I can only guess that it is caused by some Qt plugin or theme on the user's system.

I'm using Ubuntu 14.10 and I'm also affected by this bug. I'm using the theme Radiance and everything else is @ the default settings.
