Bug Description

This seems like a regression from

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vlc/+bug/664030

and

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vlc/+bug/211632

I am experiencing an issue in 14.04, but it says fix is released. I did not have the issue on 13.10 with VLC 2.1.2.

Step to reproduce:
1. Mount a SMB share.
2. Open VLC and select File > Open > Directory (select smb folder).

Dragging and dropping the files in the directory to the playlist works. Interestingly, dragging and dropping the folder does not.

The error displayed is: VLC is unable to open the MRL

Make sure you mounted the SMB filesystem; VLC has never supported accessing SMB network file system directories directly.

If it still fails, please provide the verbose VLC logs (vlc -vv).

This is a mounted file system. SMB is the underlying protocol. I am able to browse to the directory but unable to play the item added to the playlist. Log attached. Seems to get caught in an endless loop. No errors in the interface.

Same path using the open multiple files works.

Drag and drop files or directories to the playlist does not work (see attachemnts vlc3-4.log). Making vlc the default media player allows the files to play from the same path when opening via nautilus (vlc5.log).

For what it's worth this same setup worked on whatever version of VLC shipped with Ubuntu 13.10.

The log rather shows the file system is NOT mounted, since it is exposed by GVFS instead. Regardless, it seems you have put the playlist to loop, repeat or shuffle, which explains the endless loop.

But the real problem seems to be that your VLC configuration is corrupted such that it won't read directories anymore. I believe this is already fixed in VLC 2.2.0 but in the mean time, removing the VLC configuration should work around the problem.

That fixes most of my problems and I should have known to try that first. Thanks and sorry about the confusion.

I still can't drag and drop, but I can work around that. I get "VLC is unable to open the MRL". Is that not supported via GVFS?
