I did "sudo apt-get install gcc-4.7" , then it tried to recompile virtualbox stuff, then output this error.

it is almost impossible to keep track of the whole gcc changes. Unfortunately we can't fix virtualbox if you want to build with a different gcc version.

export CC=gcc-4.6 CXX=g++-4.6 and so on, and build it again if you really want gcc-4.7 to be your default.

the distro has been released with 4.6 as default, you can't change it and expect everything still works.
