Bug Description

Hi,

I am experiencing problem getting the GLX compiz effects to work.
Let me describe the steps I have taken.

1. I have downloaded the latest Ubuntu 11.10 alpha2 32bit Desktop image and installed it under VirtualBox 4.1.0 (running on Windows 7).

2. Logged in and updated all the packages (about 400 of them).

3. I then installed the VB Guest Additions and rebooted (including the OpenGL and X.org)

4. Then when logging-in using the "ubuntu" desktop, it falls back onto the "ubuntu 2D" desktop.

Running "compiz --replace" prints the following problems (full text attached):
Compiz (opengl) - Fatal: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing
Compiz (opengl) - Fatal: Software rendering detected
    /bin/sh: gnome-panel: not found

and refuse to start.

Checking "glxinfo | grep GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap" prints (full text attached):
    GLX_EXT_import_context, GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap, GLX_OML_swap_method,
    GLX_SGIX_visual_select_group, GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap,

I am also running Ubuntu 11.04 under the same VirtualBox instance and all 3D effects are enabled and working just fine, so this appears to be some regression in the 11.10 alpha releases.
From "glxinfo" I see OpenGL reports software rendering - but that's not really true (and if it were? Why not let the user make the choice of which desktop, maybe the host is fast enough to work well with software rendering - although I think VirtualBox maps it to the host OS 3D acceleration API).

If you need any additional information, please let me know.
I'd appreciate some insight, tips or suggestions as to how to proceed form here.

Thanks,
   Sefer.

Hi,

This issue appears to still persist with Ubuntu 11.10beta1.
It appears to be a regression from Ubuntu 11.04 which runs compiz just fine under the same VirtualBox 4.1.2. I also get frequent crashes from the 2D panel now (you might want to try running it under VB).

Any clues as to why 3D support is rejected with 11.10beta1 (while allowed in 11.04)?
Let me know if you can dig out the difference between the releases that causes this regression.

Thanks,
    Sefer.

Hi,

Congratulations on the release of the final Ubuntu 11.10
That said, this regression still persists. It still will not use 3D acceleration (compiz) under VirtualBox.
In additional I also tried "VMWare Player 4" with identical results.

Unfortunately I'm unfamiliar with the underlying mechanisms to investigate it much farther than what I provided above. However it had worked just fine in Ubuntu 11.04 - which means that some recent change has introduced that regression.

I'd appreciate it if one of the 3D Unity desktop maintainers could look into it.

Thanks
     Sefer.
