Bug Description

Binary package hint: virtualbox-ose

creating a new VM with the 32-bit ubuntu template, then installing 10.4 virtual server edition, it installs ok, but on first boot crashes with "PAE needs to be enabled"

Also, the error message says the setting is in general -> advanced, but actually it is system -> processor

After enabling PAE, the kernel boots, but then says it can't find the SATA disk -- reinstalling using an IDE disk works ok

I guess your are using an Ubuntu server image in the guest?
The desktop variant works fine without PAE.

Yes, the server image -- specifically, when it boots I hit F4 and
select the "designed for VMs" variation
