This bug was submitted awhile ago, are you still having the same issue?

Host: Ubuntu 9.04 updated as of 12/August.
Guest: WinXP SP3.
Virtualbox 3.04

Tried with pulseaudio and proper drivers (from XP's cd) installed on guest. Sound output is working well. No sound issues on host.

This problem is a widespread one. Absolutely everyone using VirtualBox 3.x.x with WinXP guest and PA on host audio backend
cannot use voice input. This renders all VOIP apps useless... which is the prime reason for many of us to switch to VB.
... And of course there are other things too like Rosetta Stone...
The problem could be because of PA or VB or both because I've seen that tweaking pulseaudio settings (especially setting the
infamous tsched=0 and altering fragment size by trial and error improves the situation in the sense that less samples
get dropped). This bug could be used to diagnose where the problem actually lies and then it can be sent upstream. I'd be
happy to provide any logs or run tests.

Confirming on Ubuntu 9.10 amd64, Virtualbox 3.1.2 and a WinXP guest, with PulseAudio on the host.

I do get fully working and flawless audio output and microphone input if I select the OSS driver in VirtualBox (device: ICH AC97).
First I had to make sure the microphone worked reliably with the host (Ubuntu)... it's currently set at Analog Stereo Duplex, but that's pretty random since it depends on which profile I clicked on before and what the current star constellation is... and for example it stops working if I start the VM while having the Sound Preferences still open, but plays nice if I close that tool before launching the VM...
Well, it works right now and I won't touch it again ;)

One disadvantage (of the OSS driver presumably) is that I can't get simultaneous audio output on the host and guest.

Hi everybody,
now I use workaround with USB soundcard. I bought USB soundcard (5$) and I using in VB with XP quest this CS for input. I know that is quite stupid but for me it is last possibility.

Looks like this was VirtualBox issue and it is now fixed in SVN/3.1.4. (http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/4302) Can anyone please include this fix to Ubuntu packages?

SVN/3.1.4 is development version so I expect that we have to wait some time on "final release" and When you use direct virtualbox repositary the fix will be applied very soon.
