I get the same error, together with some other related to virtualbox (virtualbox was previously installed)
ERROR got an error from dpkg for pkg: '/var/cache/apt/archives/virtualbox-ose_2.0.2-dfsg-0ubuntu3_i386.deb': 'subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

I have the same with virtualbox-ose_2.0.2-dfsg-0ubuntu3_amd64.deb I was able to continue the installation anyway,
Upgrade from 8.04 Kubuntu to 8.10 beta with Adept. Logs attached.

You have probably answered "No" to the questions about losing snapshots.

This should be fixed with the recent 2.0.4 upload and I'm marking it therefore as duplicate of bug 288178.
