virtualbox-
ubuntu hardy, 8.04
package not installed because the needed module is nonexistent. workaround by compiling from source manually
I expected the module to be updated to a module compatible with the new kernel package
nothing happened, thus virtualbox-ose ceased to function

The new modules have been copied to hardy-updates now. See bug 238019, where I'm marking this one here a duplicate of.
