Bug Description

The base kernel in 8.04 is now 2.6.24-17 but there is no equivalent set of vbox modules (latest is -16) which are required in order to start vbox virtual machines.

kernel 2.6.24-17 seems to me only available on proposed so for testing purpose
you can perhaps remove your proposed entry in the /etc/apt/sources.list

cheers

Yes, I can do that, or even just select the -16 kernel from the grub menu
but as far as I remember the "proposed" repo is enabled by default out of
the box so this is a problem that may affect other people.

I can't found documentation of proposed repo in wiki documentation.
In the french community one it is specified that is for testing purpose only and i don't think that is activated out of the box but perhaps i'm wrong.

However it seems that 2.6.24-17 doesn't appear in proposed any more so i think than it has been desactivated.

Cheers !

ps : are you agree to change the status of the bug to invalid to not waste the time of bug triaggers ?

Well I can still see 2.6.24-17 in proposed and the intention of proposed
is that they eventually move to updates or security at which point this
will require fixing. But mark as invalid if it make you feel better.

MarkS, -proposed isn't enabled by default (at least when using the Ubuntu LiveCD).
The kernel module should be available now.
I'm marking it as duplicate of bug 226753.

Changed in virtualbox-ose-modules:
status: New → Invalid
