Please provide the output of the following commands in a terminal:
$ uname -a
$ dpkg -l | grep linux-image
$ dpkg -l | grep virtualbox

I suspect, you've installed e.g. virtualbox-ose-modules-386 on a generic system, which caused the -386 kernel, but not the modules to get installed.

Instead of the second command, please use the following instead:
$ dpkg -l | grep `uname -r`

You are right, I have installed the virtualbox-ose-modules-386 on a generic system:
ii linux-image-2.6.24-16-generic 2.6.24-16.30 Linux kernel image for version 2.6.24 on x86
ii linux-image-generic 2.6.24.16.18 Generic Linux kernel image

But I am unable to fix the damage by installing the generic virtualbox module.
So I decided to reinstall the complete Ubuntu system.

Thank you for reporting back.
You should have been able to boot the -generic kernel still, by selecting it from the (grub) boot menu and/or by removing the virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.24-16-386 package again.
I'm closing this bug as "Invalid".
