Bug Description

Binary package hint: virtualbox-guest-additions

When installing the guest additions of VirtualBox on Kubuntu 11.04 (64 bit) the X server does not start any more with the following error:

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Xorg.0.log shows the following errors:

(EE) module ABI major version (9) doesn't match the server's version (10)
(EE) Failed to load module "vboxvideo" (module requirement mismatch, 0)
(EE) No drivers available.

Host is Windows XP Pro (32 bit) with VirtualBox 4.0.4.

The error happens with the ISO image provided by the Windows installation of VirtualBox as well as with the ISO images from the virtualbox-guest-additions package.

Without the guest additions, the X server starts without problems.

Installing the guest additions directly from the package provided by Oracle works:

wget http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.0.6/virtualbox-4.0_4.0.6-71344~Ubuntu~natty_amd64.deb
dpkg -x virtualbox-4.0_4.0.6-71344~Ubuntu~natty_amd64.deb your_directory_name
mkdir iso_image
sudo mount -l loop your_directory_name/usr/share/virtualbox/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso iso_image
cd iso_image
sudo ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run

It seems that there is an update from 4.0.4 to 4.0.6 which has not been shipped for the Windows version of VirtualBox.

Maybe this update could be included in the backports (?).

hi,
firstly:

Since you run a Windows host you may wish to follow this discussion:

http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=40922&start=45#p184602

You may find out there, that GA 4.0.4-71416 was ment to be used for windows hosts. Then this was ported to 4.0.6
This is history now, hence, a newer Version 4.08 is available since 2001-04-16

Besides - you got stuck with a wrong inclusion (I got messed up with this thinking too, a while ago.)

There is actually no need to to install guest-additions from within Ubuntu, if it is run as guest.. The Guest system gets established from the Host-System (this is in your case Windows) supplied with the package you downloaded from VirtualBox.org

Besides, the Guestadditions have to match the main package, if you try anything else you may ruin your .vdi

This bug can be marked as "wont fix".

Best regards

P.S.: VirtualBox supplies one of the best documentions I've seen.

edit:
correction:

You may find out there, that GA 4.0.6-71416 was ment to be used for windows hosts.

Nedd to put another text-addition to state it more precise:

There is actually no need to to install guest-additions from within Ubuntu via KpackageKit (Synaptic Package Managment), if it is run as guest.. The Guest system gets established from the Host-System (this is in your case Windows) supplied with the package you downloaded from VirtualBox.org

The guest-addition must be installed via vboxmanage as it lies within the host-system

EOL-Version thus marked as incomplete

Changed in virtualbox-guest-additions (Ubuntu):
status: New → Invalid
