Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Installed a Lucid lucid-desktop-i386_20100316.iso guest OS on my VirtualBox PUEL installed via the vendor repository onto an Ubuntu 9.04 i386 host OS. The version has been: 3.1.4-57640_Ubuntu_jaunty for a little while now.

Recently I had no trouble adding the Guest OS Additions to a Lucid guest OS.

Today, X fails to start in high-res graphics, but will start in low graphics mode.

I will try a few of my downloaded daily ISO's to try to narrow it down as to when exactly it broke.

Hi Michael,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you're using a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

Please find attached the requested files.

I provided all Xorg log files that existed in this VM.

Oh, and no customizations to the xorg.conf. Clean install of Lucid, run the VB Guest Addons install, reboot, X will not start.

I can confirm the following:

I can clean install Alpha 3 from ISO, install the Guest Additions and reboot without repro. I can then apply updates from the daily fire hose, and hit the issue.

I just reproduced this with Beta 1 -- because it includes all the updates already, the issue reproduces as soon as you install the Guest Additions and reboot.

As promised, I tested older ISO images I still had on hand. Clean install of 20100224 which is the Alpha 3 release, reboot, install the Guest Additions and reboot... the VirtualBox driver properly loads.

So somewhere between 20100224 A3 and 20100316 this broke.

Next I will try with the Beta 1 ISO.

Testing again with the 20100326 ISO and also 3.1.6-59338_Ubuntu_jaunty as that got updated recently.

The Guest Additions now appear to work properly with Ubuntu 10.04. The video driver works properly.

Also the mouse driver odd behavior has been resolved. Now it seamlessly works in the VM session and outside of the VM session without having to click to get in the VM and R-Ctrl to get back out.

This looks to be resolved.

Yup, had to install 20100326 plus daily updates. Only then did it accept the VirtualBox Guest Additions.

Aaahhh, Bryce / Felix... I am confused. All of these posts, and now you flip the status to confirmed?

And I was installing VB from the vendor repo, not the Ubuntu repo.

I said that as of the 20100326 all problems are now RESOLVED.

Do you install the guest additions through the virtualbox-ose-guest-* packages or through the iso image ("Install Guest Additions")?

Michael Lueck (mlueck) wrote :

I only knew of installing them via the iso image... the iso that is installed during the VB install. So that is what I was referring to.

I am running the non-OSE VB from the VB repo... VB PUEL edition... as stated originally.

Ubuntu Lucid guest support has been added to VirtualBox 3.1.6 which needs to be synced from Debian.
That's why I set the bug to Confirmed.

I had not noticed the .4 to .6 rev in what my machine pulled down from the VB repo. Indeed that is the case.

Agreed that 3.1.6 is needed in the Ubuntu repo. Thanks! :-)
