Bug Description

I'm running Lucid Alpha 3 fully updated inside a VirtualBox in Karmic, also fully updated. After a recent kernel upgrade from 2.6.32-15 to 2.6.32-16, the Guest Additions stopped working, as in X does not properly start anymore and goes to low-resolution mode.

To confirm the issue, I reinstalled a fresh daily build of Lucid: X stopped working after I installed the guest additions. Until then I was using VirtualBox OSE from the Karmic repositories. Switched to VirtualBox from Sun's site and got the issue again. Finally, I downgraded to 2.6.32-15 and the issue was gone in all cases.

The issue with Xorg failing to start appears to be an incompatibility between the VirtualBox Guest Additions and the new version of the kernel. There is a workaround in the bug report here:

Whatever the kernel (2.6.32-16 or 2.6.31-20) my 10.04 i86 beta 1 is running,
Sun's VB 3.1.4 with contained Guest additions :
- does not integrate the mouse
- sets the screen to 1152×864 but it no longer resize to window's size

Andre Pirard, Virtual Box 3.1.4 is non open source edition. Can you try doing this with the virtualbox-ose package that comes with Ubuntu?
Do let us know if the bug persists with this package. Thanks!

I can confirm on virtualbox OSE in Karmic, running a Lucid guest. This advice [1] fixes the problem. You have to install guest-additions, then *before* you reboot, edit /usr/src/vboxvideo-3.1.4/vboxvideo_drm.c and then run sudo /etc/init.d/vboxadd setup.
