Bug Description

Binary package hint: virt-manager

$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 9.04
Release: 9.04
$ apt-cache policy virt-manager
virt-manager:
  Installed: 0.6.1-1ubuntu4
  Candidate: 0.6.1-1ubuntu4
  Version table:
 *** 0.6.1-1ubuntu4 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

What I expected to happen:

I expected to select "ac97" from the drop-down list of available sound devices.
(start virt-manager -> select virtual machine -> go to hardware tab -> click add hardware button -> select sound from the hardware device drop-down list -> click next -> try to select "ac97" from the drop-down list)

What happened instead:

Instead, only es1370, pcspk, and sb16 were chosen.

Why this was inconvenient for me:

I'm a student, and the only version of Windows I can get for free is Windows Server 2008, but there are no drivers for that operating system for es1370 or sb16.

Work-around:

Start kvm from the command line and pass the -soundhw ac97 option to get sound working in Windows Server 2008 (probably works for Vista as well).

Also:

This could be a libvirt issue. Probably it's a very small patch. In fact, it may even be upstream already. I'll look.

So, ac97 support was added to libvirt in 0.6.2 which was released on 3 April 2009.

So, this patch to libvirt 0.6.1 makes it so that you can add ac97 to the xml file for your virtual machine and run the virtual machine with ac97 support through virt-manager. The dialog box in virt-manager still needs to be updated. (these are the relevant changes made to libvirt 0.6.2 that allow ac97 support).

I'm having the same problem with Windows 7.

Additionally, I'd like to point out that we can't choose between video drivers either.

Thanks for reporting this issue.

This issue was fixed in more recent versions of virt-manager, such as the one in Karmic or Lucid.
