Bug Description

ALT GR key seem to be locked when I connect from a knoppix distribution with tightvncviewer to vino under Ubuntu 64, but works perfectly from the same station to another computer with a knoppix distribution on it.

Thanks for your bug. What keyboard configuration do you use (gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd)? What version of Ubuntu has vino running?

Hi and thank you for the great work you and other ubuntu programmers do.
I'd like to know so mutch about linux programming ;-)

The command return this result on the host :
root@nicolas:/home/nicolas# gconftool-2 -R
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd
 layouts = []
 model =
 overrideSettings = true
 options = []

The client is running with kaella (a knoppix based french distribution
using KDE), so I suppose gconftool-2 doesn't exists, doesn't it ? I must
add I use a french keyboard and I configure ubuntu with its setting.

Vino version is 2.12.0-0ubuntu1.

Don't hesitate to mail me again : if I can help in any way, I'll be glad
to do so.

Might be fixed with dapper, new version has that changelog entry:

Hey Nicolas, so does the update fix it for you like Sebastien thinks it might have?

Hi.

Is that upstream bug report the same of this one?

i'm using edgy here, and alt-gr from windows client to ubuntu definitely doesn't work. it's really bad, because on my slovenian keyboard, it means i can't type:

[]{}@

which means programming using vnc from a windows computer is a complete nightmare.

I tried the tightVNC and ultraVNC windows clients.

I use edgy / vino 2.16.0-0ubuntu2.4 / french keyboard on my desktop and when I connect from a Nokia N800 using the N800 vncviewer port, I get the same problem : the AltGr key is not working properly (AltGr + 6 gives "-" instead of the mighty geek key "|", and I've no way to generate it).

vncviewer / N800 port developpers confirm this is the bug upstream

Would be nice to have a fix at some point :).

Looks like the upstream gnome bugzilla has patches, any chance they'll be applied in ubuntu?

PS: I checked vnc4server does not have the problem, all keys are transmitted perfectly.

The patches from bugzilla are non trivial and not likely to be used for a distribution patch. That patch might fix the problem though: http://cvs.fedora.redhat.com/viewcvs/rpms/vino/devel/vino-2.12.0-fix-broken-level3-shift.patch?rev=1.1&view=markup

Could anybody give it a try and comment to say if that fixes the bug?

The feisty package already has that change, do you have the problem with that version?

I believe I have the latest version:

Version: 2.17.92-0ubuntu1

And unfortunately this does not fix the problem, @ and | are not working (produce nothing) when using vncviewer to control my feisty desktop.

Note that those keys do work when I control a vnc4server on the same feisty box, unfortunately it's currently not possible to launch a gnome desktop under vnc4server in feisty, see:

well, same timing. i also just tested it with vino 2.17.92-0ubuntu1, and i confirm: it still doesn't work.

i'm wondering if the VNC clients we're using also support that. I'm using ultraVNC. I'm saying that because both computers have slovenian keyboards, and that also the slovenian specific keys čšž don't work through that VNC connection, which is another problem than alt-GR. Maybe those windows VNC clients always assume the keyboard is en-US or something like that?

Emmanuel Touzery (emmanuel-touzery) wrote :

well actually it supports the basic keys in the right layout for sure; if i type "qwertz" through VNC, "qwertz" is displayed, not qwerty or something like that. it's still strange that čšž doesn't go through.

Emmanuel, one vnc client developper confirmed me the problem was with vino (and note that it works when vnc4 is used as server instead of vino).

I can confirm this. This makes console usage nearly impossible because keys like | aren't possible with a german keyboard.

I've applied a patch from upstream which i think could fix this issue.
As it's a very big patch, i'd like to do some tests before commit it.

I created a package for Ubuntu Gusty. Please, test and tell your impressions.
For those who aren't running Ubuntu Gutsy, there is also a tarball (.tar.gz) available.

Check out: http://www.gnome.org/~jwendell/code/

Thanks.
