vim cannot find installed spell files

Bug Description
Binary package hint: vim
I'm running vim72 through Ubuntu 9.04. I'm confused that
:setlocal spell
(or variants) gives
Error detected while processing SpellFileMissing Auto commands for "*":
E117: Unknown function: spellfile#LoadFile
Warning: Cannot find word list "en.utf-8.spl" or "en.ascii.spl"
even though the needed spell file is there at
/usr/share/
What I have installed:

Everything I'm doing has worked before in vim 71.
Please withdraw this bug report. There was a vim71 in ~/.vim, /var/lib/ vim/addons, /usr/share/ vim/vimfiles, /usr/share/ vim/vim71, /usr/share/ vim/vimfiles/ after,/ var/lib/ vim/addons/ after,~ /.vim/after
set runtimepath=
in my old customized .exrc file.
